Tools of the Trade

The thing that impressed me most from the trip to Blenko glass factory was the art created by such primitive tools.

Click here and here to see videos of the tools in action!

All to help create these beauties on my mantle!

Please comment below which career you would like to have one day, and find a picture of one TOOL that trade needs.

What does commemorate mean?

Today's task will be to discover what the word commemorate means and how it is connected to glass.

You will be able to use the clues from context and links provided in this blog post, but NOT the dictionary or dictionary.com.

Answer these questions in a comment below. Don't forget to "sign" your comment with your first name.

1. What does commemorate mean?
2. Why do you believe glass is often used to commemorate a special event?
3. Use commemorate/commemorative in a sentence that shows you know the meaning of the word.

I first thought of this word on our state's 150th birthday. Read this article to see how Blenko commemorated this special day.

Next, click on these commemorative pieces on eBay that people are selling. Read to see how much they are and what they are commemorating

Blenko Inquiry

Hi students!

I have exciting news! I will be touring Blenko Glass Factory in Milton, WV in June after school is out. I need your help! I will have the opportunity to ask questions, and I WONDER what you are WONDERING about glass and it's history in our area.

Check out the website to the factory I'll be touring. Click on the pages across the top of the webpage to access photos, videos, and more!

Read this blog post from my classmate about the history of the factory.

Post two questions you would ask based on the information you learned in your research of Blenko. Your questions need to be specific and show me that you now have BK (background knowledge) about the topic.

Glass Blowing Explored

Many of you were confused when we studied Jamestown glass as to what glassblowing was. I added two videos to help clear up this confusion.

Watch this video, then comment with three things it makes you wonder.

Glass Blowing Explored from Ken G. Stewart on Vimeo.

I WONDER if any of your WONDERINGS from the first video could be answered with this video?

Glass and Jamestown

Follow these directions:

1. Do a SEE-THINK-WONDER with this image. Come back AFTER your see-think-wonder is complete to follow the rest of the directions.

2. On an iPad, record on audioboo your "I think _______ because ______." statement. I will upload them to this blog to share your response with the class.

3. Use the text on this website (click here) to answer the following questions:

a. What was "one of the Jamestown colonists’ first attempts at industrialization and manufacturing in America"?
b. Based on our study of Jamestown so far, why do you believe that the "attempts were not successful" to bring in glass blowers?
c. How do we know today that there were glasshouses in Jamestown?
d. Think back to our DIG article about the discovery of Jamestown fort... What job/occupation did the people who found the glasshouses have?
e. Read about the image here. Write your "From my reading I now know that _____________." statement.

See-think-wonder

What do you see/observe?

What do you think it's purpose is?

What does it make you wonder?
